Beginner Road Bike

Discovering the best beginner road bike for you

Used Road Bike

Buying a used road bike is often thought of as a good way to get a bike for someone just getting into the sport that isn’t sure how long they will stay in the sport. You see buying a new bike isn’t cheap and can cost between $500 and $5000. A person often can’t justify those costs just for one ride or race.

Buying a used bike for that initial bike sounds like a good strategy for saving  money and it can be on actual sale price but you need to be careful. If you aren’t you could end up with additional costs that could make the overall price almost as much as a new one. That being said it also could save you a lot of money.

There are a lot of ways of finding and buying good quality used bicycles that we never used to have. Before you had the bike shop in town and maybe a garage sale but today online auctions like eBay or online classified listing such as Craig’s list or Kijiji are some of the great resources on the internet for finding and buying used bikes.

When you first start looking at bikes the choices seem overwhelming because there are so many. But it won’t take you too long to start getting an idea of the bikes that might be available in the price range you want to pay. Because let’s face it if you are looking to buy used you are looking to not have to spend very much or at least your resources are limited which means ultimately the price is going to determine what you buy.

Now all you have to do is get the best deal you can with the most of what you want for the price you want to pay. In actual fact if you are only a beginner it won’t matter to much that you have the best frame or the best components as you are just developing your skills. What will matter and will make the most difference is finding a bike that is sized right for you and is in good shape. There are adjustments to fitting the bike so you can get the most out of your bike but if it isn’t in good shape as we have already said it could cost you a bunch more money just to get it working right.

One of the biggest differences in bikes is what the frame is made out of. To figure out which would be best for you, you need to decide if you will be using it more for easy riding where comfort is important or for performance. Here again different people have differing opinions. Some think that steel frames offer you a more comfortable ride. I’m not sure I’d say that but they are the cheapest. Aluminum frames are lighter and tend to be more efficient but are less comfortable. Carbon fiber is the most expensive but is the lightest and gives you the best performance and comfort. The above are general rules but the quality of a frame plays a big role and will cause the performance a feel of a frame to vary drastically.

I personally believe that it isn’t a bad idea to buy cheap or used to get into the sport. I bought a great used road bike on eBay myself and enjoy it every time I ride. I also obviously believe in using online resources to help you find what you are looking for.

I am sure you too can use these resources to your advantage in finding a great deal and saving money.
